Need a Radio?

Looking to talk with PPG pilots?

The vast majority of pilots whom are looking simply to talk back and forth to each other or to their instructors go with a “Two-meter Radio.”  We recommend the affordable Wouxun KG-UV86 Dual band radio.

This radio has much better transmit, receive,  better construction, and is compatible with other two meter radios.

Looking to talk with aviation traffic?

Many pilots fly out of, in, and around airports and have the need to communicate with aviation traffic. Our top recommendations for this is the Wouxun KG-R86.  This radio is loud, light weight, well constructed, affordable, easy to use, and has great battery life.

Note:  The majority of BLUETOOTH radios have disabled the transmit functionality, you still can receive, but can not transmit over bluetooth.  That being said bluetooth is not very useful with these aviation radios.

Helmet FAQs

What size helmet should I get?

Check out the size chart below.  In general 90% of men go with the Large as these go down in size better than they go up as there is an adjustable buckle on the backside of the helmet

ICARO Solar X Size Chart:

  • Large 57cm – 61cm
  • Medium 55cm – 56cm
  • Small 53cm – 54cm
How do I install the headset?

In the pictures you will see threaded inserts that are used for both the ear cup mounts and visors.  To install the ear cups it simply screwing in the screws into the threaded inserts and running the wires through the channel routed in the foam.  Secure the wire with a piece of tape and your done.  Check out our Youtube video here (there now is an optional sticker that goes over the hole on the headset stay stationary on the helmet).

The screws are provided, but incase you loose them they are M5X20mm.

Can I add a visor?

Yes.  There are threaded inserts on both sides of the helmet to allow for the visor to be secured to the helmet.  No drilling or cutting needed.

Why are the scratch colors more expensive?

There’s two primary reasons for this.  The materials used and the manufacturing process is different for these vs the others.   Volume is also another factor, there a little more of a specialty item.

Does the ICARO Solar X come in an XL?

Unfortunately the Solar X comes in a Large (61cm) as its biggest size at this time.  This primarily driven by the demand and sizes coming from the European market(s).  That said we have had others make some minor easy modifications to the helmet that have made it more comfortable for some of us with the larger/egg shaped heads.

What's included in the box with the helmet?

Box contents:

  • Helmet
  • Interchangeable Liner – installed on helmet
  • Fabric Carrying Case

Aside from the aesthetic appearances there has been allot of R&D, product evolution, and quality standards that have gone into mass producing the ICARO Solar X.

ICARO Solar X Highlights:

  • E.N. 966 certification
  • Adjustable/Removable/Washable Liner
  • Airflow inside the helmet
  • Light weight 550 grams (19oz)
  • Threaded inserts for visor and headset mounting
  • Stainless steel wire side pieces
  • Micrometric chin strap

Headset FAQs

Whats up with Bluetooth on the headset?

The most common Bluetooth connection to the Microavionics headset is connecting it to the phone for use with calls and listening to music.  Additionally, you can connect to other devices such as radios.  You can actually connect your radio and phone at the sametime. If a radio signal comes in, it will temporarily mute the Bluetooth signal and keep the radio as priority.

Phones Questions:

  • How does it answer? After 2 rings it will auto answer your phone for you. You can use your siri powers or smilar after that.
  • Can I use Siri with my headset?   You will need to push the PTT or have switch #3 (sidetone) turned ON.  “Hey Siri” works like a charm.
  • How do I pair my headset to the phone? Bluetooth is on automatically and will be in a pair mode when turned on.  Go to your device settings and select “Microavonics-1234.” After that if your device is in range it will pair automatically.
  • How to I stop/prevent spam calls?  Easiest way is to use your customized “do not disturb” mode.  I set mine to only allow calls that are in my contact list.  That way everyone else goes to voicemail.

Radio Questions:

  • Will the headset connect to Bluetooth Radios? We’ve tested it with several major brands like ICOM and Yaesu. You will hear the radio over the Bluetooth signal once paired to the radio.
  • Can I transmit over Bluetooth?   Technically speaking the FCC doesn’t want wireless or remote devices activation radio transmissions.  That said if your connected wirelessly to your radio you via Bluetooth and press the PTT on the headset your radio will not transmit.  If you press the PTT on the handheld radio it will transmit over the Bluetooth.  Also others have had luck buying a 3rd party wireless remote PTT switch that activates the PTT in the radio, essentially tricking it to think someone’s physically pushing the button, then the wireless transmission has would work over the Bluetooth to the radio.

Action Camera/Go Pro Questions

    • Can I record my audio to my Go Pro via Bluetooth? This one is on your camera manufacturer.  Unfortunately most cameras software blocks that input signal so your forced to buy their adapters.  That said you do have options.
      1. Get our Action Camera/Go Pro lead (3.5mm audio output connector) + any needed camera adapter (converts the 3.5mm to your cameras input). This will stream any audio heard in your headset directly to your camera (Must turn DIP switch #3 ON).  BEST SOLUTION FOR AUDIO QUALITY AND SIMPLICITY.
      2. Skip Adapters and Record via Bluetooth to a device this option is a band aid workaround. Simply put your going to connect your phone or audio recording device via Bluetooth to your headset.  This will be recording your audio.  Then you will have your video on your camera and you will need to merge the files during editing.  Kind of a pain, but a solution.  **TIP once both are recording CLAP so your camera can see it.  This makes it easy for syncing up the audio and video file.**
Does this headset have an intercom?

Each headset comes from the factory with a built-in intercom.  This intercom works AMAZING for tandems allowing you to talk freely to your passengers with the voice activated circuitry.

This functionality requires our tandem lead the plugs into the auxiliary port of each headset.  Additionally you can record to your Go Pro, listen to your phone/music, and use your radio ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

Will this work with Sena?

One or our best customer(s) are guys fed up with the Sena’s.  While they work ok on motorcycles, they struggle with connectivity issues based on the limitation of the Bluetooth signals causing connection problems, audio quality issues, and delays in transmissions/receptions.  Additionally Sena has proprietary software that blocks other devices from utilizing their intercoms, so your stuck in the Sena world if you want Sena.

Can I do tandems with this headset?

Absolutely!  The tandem intercom is one of the unsung heros in the design of the Microavionics PM-100 Paramotor Headset.

How does it work?

  • Turn switch #3 SIDETONE/Tandem to the ON position (this makes the microphones voice activated)
  • Using the tandem lead plug the to headsets into the auxiliary socket and simply talk.  No buttons, just like talking on a phone.
Can I get my headset with no wires?

Yes.  We’ve recently added our removable primary lead as an option.  We add a connector to the bottom of the ear cup the allows you to connect and disconnect your radio lead as needed.

Do I need to pick a radio before I buy my headset?

We provide each headset with a radio lead.  Our standard headset comes with an integrated radio lead that is built into the headset and we configure it to your specific radio.    We generally recommend our interchangeable lead or removable primary lead as it makes swapping the radio in the future possible and simple.

Which radio should I buy?

There are two main paths here.  If you’re flying out of an airport or around an airport frequently we recommend a general aviation radio.  If your flying with your buddies and don’t care to listen/talk to other aircraft folks go the 2-meter amateur’s radio path (70% of PPG pilots go this path).

Radio Recommendations

  • General Aviation – ICOM A16
    • Affordable, great range, and high quality.  Also has a common connector within their product line and a few others.
  • 2-Meter Amateurs Radio – Wouxon UV86
    • Affordable, great range, and high quality.  Lots of folks like the Wouxon, but are disappointed with the amount of electric noise the antenna picks up from the ignition.  Wouxon has better construction and better ferrite shielding to prevent this.  Also the Wouxon shares the same connector as the Baofengs and the same frequencies.
Can I use 2 radios at the sametime?

Yes.  Our headsets come with one radio lead built it. If you’re looking to add a second radio lead then you can add a secondary radio lead.  This lead plugs into the auxiliary port and allows you to use two radios at the sometime.  Simply push the push to talk (PTT) button on the secondary radio lead or the PTT on radio to transmit on the secondary radio.

Whats the difference between the integrated and removable Action Camera/Go Pro Lead?

Functionality wise these are both the same.   Both will provide a 3.5mm audio output jack that will plug into your camera or cameras adapter.   Also included is a Velcro strap to secure the lead when its not in use, you wont even know its there.

Which Action Camera/Go Pro Lead Should I get?

  • Removable – If you occasionally are going to fly with a camera and do not plan to use the auxiliary port (tandems, secondary radio, or remote PTT).
  • Integrated – If you plan to use a secondary radio, tandem lead, remote PTT, and/or plan to use your camera frequently……the integrated lead is for you.

YOU WILL NEED TO TURN ON SWITCH #3 TO HAVE AUDIO RUN TO YOUR CAMERA.

Whats up with the extra thick gel ear seal?

Our standard gel ear seals that come with every headset are 15mm thick.  We’ve introduced the extra thick gel ear seals which are 25mm thick.  If you have a really skinny head and/or plan to fly with glasses these are a good option for you.  They will provide a little tighter fit under both circumstances.
